While there were many topics of this class that I already knew from being in the IT industry, I did find some things that I found helpful and will most likely use in the future.
Word Press
Word Press is something that I am now more comfortable with and will use it with my team to blog about any announcements of new developments from the software that we support as well as exciting new projects that our team is working on. This can not only serve as a valuable touch point with our current or future clients, but it can also help the consultants at our company keep track of what we are working on and refer back to previous projects. We do need to be careful of not exposing too much detail on our projects as some of the information is confidential.
SAP
Although I don’t envision using SAP in my current position directly, now that I understand the different features of SAP and what is available I can see more opportunities for potential integrations with the software systems that my company supports into some of the other areas of SAP. For example, we can provide an interface for vendors to automatically submit invoices into SAP via a web portal, or communicate to vendors when inventories are low that a potential order needs to be replenished.
Data Modeling
The data modeling tools we learned are also something I will use and start integrating into our technical documents to explain the schema of the existing databases and proposed touch points between multiple data sources. More specifically it can help my team members who are new to the software products we work with become better acquainted with the database when they are tasked with developing reports. We are often acquiring new resources who are not familiar with the complex systems we work with and sometimes with the business process that the software supports. These data models will help clearly convey how the tables are related together and how the data should flow without describing the relationships in a lengthy document or spending time on meetings to explain how things work.
